When cutting the tails of newborn piglets, the tails are cauterized, and thus the vessels close simultaneously. Pathogens cannot penetrate when the vessels are immediately tightly closed. Generally, tails are trimmed to a length of 2-3 cm. The reason for cutting tails is to avoid cannibalism among pigs, which could occur if the tails remained long during rearing and fattening.
